Jocelyn Shand obtained her dental degree from the University of Otago, New Zealand, and a Medical Degree and Masters Degree from the University of Melbourne.

She completed a general fellowship in England and a specialist fellowship in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Australia.

Jocelyn has worked in hospitals in New Zealand, England, Australia and in the USA

Jocelyn undertook her surgical training in Melbourne and then travelled to the USA, where she undertook a Chief Resident year at the University of Oklahoma, followed by a Fellowship in Paediatric Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

After returning to Melbourne she took up a Consultant position at The Royal Children’s Hospital of Melbourne, and has worked as a consultant at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and at the Austin Medical Centre.

Jocelyn joined Kevin Ruljancich and Andrew Heggie as an Associate in their practice in 2004, and together they formed Melbourne Oral and Facial Surgery (MOFS) and built their rooms and Day Hospital in Exhibition Street.

In 2018 Melbourne Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was formed and moved into premises at 120 Collins Street.

Associations & Publications

Jocelyn became the Vice-President of the Australian & New Zealand Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2007, and then President in 2009. She is a member of the Board of Studies in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and is currently the Chair of the Standing Committee. She is the Director of OMS Training for Victoria & Tasmania and sits on the Regional Surgical Committee.

Jocelyn was the Chair of the Basic Surgical Training Committee and a member of the BST Examination Panel.
She has published a number of scientific papers and a book chapter, and is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. She regularly presents at local and international conferences.

Specialties in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Jocelyn performs general OMS procedures, and has a particular interest in paediatric maxillofacial surgery & pathology, and the correction of facial skeletal deformities, cleft lip & palate and facial anomalies, orthognathic surgery and the use of distraction techniques.

Jocelyn has been involved in the Melbourne Research Unit for Facial Disorders, University of Melbourne, and has undertaken research with the support of the Unit. She has also traveled overseas for surgical aid visits to Bangladesh and Guatemala.
